Waxing Before and Aftercare: Tips and Tricks

There’s no denying that waxing leads to unbelievably smooth skin. It leaves your skin feeling soft, healthy, and most importantly, free of hair. Although a popular and gratifying hair removal method, for some it may be one of the most intimidating.

Are you interested in waxing, but the thought of pain makes you hesitant to book a session? Have you booked a waxing treatment session but are unsure what steps you need to take next?

We’re here to help make the process as seamless as possible. Follow these essential steps to prepare for your treatment to make it a more comfortable experience. Then we’ll walk you through tips for after your wax that will help the smoothness last.

4 Tips for Preparing for Your Waxing Treatment

1. Hair Length

Make sure you let your hair grow out to at least ¼ of an inch long. The time it takes to grow to this length varies for everyone, but you can expect it to take approximately three weeks. This length allows the wax to grip the hairs and pull them out effectively. However, you must make sure not to grow the hair too long either. Wax has a difficult time clinging to hairs when it gets substantially longer than ¼ of an inch and may result in a less comfortable experience.

2. Exfoliate

Exfoliate the area you plan to have waxed a day or two before your appointment. If you have sensitive skin, you may want to consider doing this a few days in advance instead. Exfoliating softens your skin and removes dead skin cells, preventing the occurrence of ingrown hairs. To do this, use a loofah or soft washcloth soaked in warm water and gently exfoliate the intended area. Make sure you do not over-exfoliate, as this may lead to breakage of the skin.

3. Moisturize

Arriving with nourished skin allows the wax to release from the surface with more ease and less pain. Regular moisturizing keeps your skin healthy and prevents it from cracking and breaking. Just be sure to avoid applying any moisturizer to the areas getting waxed on the day of your appointment.

4. Clean Up

Showering or bathing before your appointment allows your follicles to open up, making removal of the hair more seamless. Pay special attention to any areas that are naturally warm and moist. These areas are prone to bacterial growth and infection. Your skin is more vulnerable post-treatment; avoid infection by ensuring the site is cleaned thoroughly before the treatment.

4 Tips for After Your Waxing Treatment

1. Protect Your Skin

There are a few ways to make sure you protect your skin after a waxing treatment. First, make sure you keep the area clean for at least one to two days post-treatment. Therefore, you should avoid swimming, sunbathing, exercising, and using topical applications (i.e. lotion, deodorant, or body sprays). Be sure to avoid tight clothing that could cause friction and irritate the newly sensitive area. Plan to wear breathable fabrics for the few days following your treatment.

2. Exfoliate

Exfoliating after a waxing treatment is essential for preventing the growth of ingrown hairs. Do this by dry brushing your skin with a dry exfoliating mitt before your shower. Alternatively, you can use a body scrub to exfoliate. Whichever method you choose, remember to be gentle and not over-exfoliate. You can begin this practice three days after your treatment and continue doing it about two times a week.

3. Moisturize

To prevent flaking and irritation after treatment, moisturize beginning two to four days after waxing. Keeping your skin well-hydrated allows the skin to soften and makes it easier for hairs to grow back properly. If you’re experiencing irritation or redness, try using aloe vera gel or hydrocortisone cream to calm the area. However, you do not want to moisturize immediately after a treatment, as it can lead to clogging pores. Ask your waxing professional about aftercare products that they may offer as well.

4. Plan Your Next Treatment

Plan to return for your subsequent waxing treatment four to six weeks after your procedure. The time between waxes varies based on hair growth, but this is the typical amount of time you can expect. Regular waxings cause hair to grow less thick and coarse, making its removal easier. Preparing in advance will help you plan and stay on schedule, keeping your skin smooth and healthy!
