What Is a Lash lift?

Picture this: You’re getting ready for a friend’s wedding or big work event, and you’re trying to get your look just right. Your hair looks flawless, you have the perfect dress for the occasion, and you’re finishing up your makeup.

You’re doing your best to make your eyes pop and can’t quite master the look. Your eyes look alright, but your lashes are lacking in volume and shape. So what now?

Putting on your own falsies has never really worked for you. Mascara isn’t doing everything you want it to. And you’ve tried every oil, gel, and cream in your cabinet to get those lashes curled and plush.

You’re looking for something to give those lashes a little extra boost for that special event, so maybe it’s time to leave it to the professionals.

How do you know whether to choose lash extensions or lash lift? If you don’t want the hassle of “extra lashes” but want all of the glam of plush, full lashes, a lift may be the right choice for you.

What is a Lash Lift?

A lash lift uses your own lashes to perm and give a natural looking curl and lift to your lashes.

Using a silicone pad, a lash specialist will perm your lashes against the pad using a chemical solution to set them.

The lash lift procedure can last anywhere from 45 minutes to one hour. Your lash specialist will work the lash from lash base to tip in order to extend the lash to its full length for the perming process.

How do they determine how much to curl the lash against the silicone pad? The larger the pad (or perming rod in some cases), the softer the curl, while a smaller one will bring about a more intense curl.

Once the solution is wiped off and the silicone pads are removed, the lash specialist will then coat the lashes with a nourishing oil to lock in the perm and moisturize your lashes.

Most lash specialists recommend that you have at least four millimeters of lashes for the lash lift service. The lash lift (or perm) lasts up to nine weeks.

Who Should Get a Lash Lift?

A low-maintenance alternative to eyelash extensions or falsies, a lash lift is great if you already have long or full lashes that need a boost or if you have sensitivity to eye products or falsies.

As far as low-maintenance goes, a lash lift works perfectly for the little-to-no makeup look as well. Wiping your lashes repeatedly trying to clean off mascara can be damaging to your natural lashes. With a lash lift, you can go mascara-free and still have the plush curl and lift to your lashes.

Lash lifts are also great for people with straight or downward-facing lashes to add instant lift to your lashes and eyes in general.

Before the Procedure

Before you go see your lash specialist for the lash lift you’ve been waiting for, there’s a few things that are recommended.

In the weeks leading up to your lash service, you should use serums, oils, or conditioners on your lashes to get them in their healthiest state before being permed with chemical solution.

Your lashes should also be makeup free heading into the lash service.

After the Procedure

As any cosmetic or medical procedure, there are guidelines to be followed following your lash lift.

The 24 hours after the appointment are the most important in aftercare for your lashes.

To allow the chemical solution to fully set, avoid wearing makeup, getting your lashes wet, or taking a hot shower for at least 24 hours after your lash lift.

Are Lash Lifts Safe?

As with any procedure, there’s always the small chance that something could go wrong.

Lash lifts are completely safe, but it is crucial to keep your eyes closed for the entire lash service. The perming solution can cause chemical burns to the eye if it touches the eye itself.

Allergic reactions to the perming solution, while not common, are also a possibility.

Following a lash lift, dry eyes are pretty common. During the lash lift procedure, your lashes/lids are being curled/pulled up, exposing the glands that exist in the water line, potentially causing some redness, puffiness, or general dryness.
