What is Microneedling?

Are you struggling to keep your skin looking fresh heading into the winter months? 2020 is coming to a close, and you’re left with the remnants of maskne, sunspots, and those stressful fine lines everyone has from this year.

From head to toe, you want healthy and glowing skin. You’ve tried every retinol, moisturizing cream, pore minimizer, and hyaluronic acid to get that youthful look going again — but nothing works.

Low-maintenance and minimally invasive skincare is your game, but you’re running out of options and wasting money on endless drugstore skincare routines.

So what’s next in aiding your winter skin concerns? Laser therapy? Botox? A facial?

Perfecting your skincare routine is as simple as booking a microneedling facial with your esthetician at Dulce Lash and Skin.

Microneedling: What You Need to Know

Microneedling is one of the hottest-growing skincare trends — it is a facelift without the downtime or surgery. By creating microscopic punctures in the skin, microneedling uses short needles to rejuvenate the skin from the surface level.

The small marks left by the needles encourage increased collagen production. The skin reacts to the minor “injury” and it responds by generating new tissue. New skin tissue tends to be more even and toned than aged or injured skin (via sunspots, acne, etc.).

With the increase in collagen production, the new skin will also appear more firm and give off a youthful glow.

Microneedling is used for a variety of skin conditions, including:

  • Acne scars
  • Sunspots
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Large pores
  • Skin tone
  • Softness
  • And more!

The esthetician doing the microneedling procedure evaluates each individual’s skin to create a custom procedure for their skin type, from selecting the needle depth (up to 3.5 millimeters at 0.1-millimeter increments) to any add-ons (like LED treatment for scarring or radiofrequency for treating other skin concerns).

Preparing for Treatment

When it comes to preparing for your microneedling procedure, physicians recommend discontinuing the use of any harsh products leading up to the procedure, as they could aggravate the skin. Avoiding direct sun exposure is also important days before the procedure.

On the Day of the Procedure

On the day of the microneedling procedure, you should head into your appointment with clean skin. Didn’t quite have time to clean it up properly? No worries, your esthetician will wash your face before the procedure.

Before the actual microneedling begins, you will get a layer of numbing cream put on your face. It won’t completely eliminate the pain associated with the needles, but it will reduce it significantly.

Small pin-pricks will be made evenly across the surface of the skin so that the skin rejuvenates evenly as well. Some procedures use a dermaroller for more even spacing.

On average, the microneedling procedure itself takes up to 30 minutes. The esthetician will follow the microneedling up with a calming serum or face mask, as the microneedling does cause slight injury to the surface of the skin.

After the Procedure

Once the microneedling and follow-up serums are complete, you will notice lingering redness for a few hours. The redness is completely normal, given the minimal bleeding that occurs with the needles.

Any post-microneedling marks will disappear within a few days just like any other minor skin-surface injury. It is also recommended that you do not wash your face, sweat excessively, sit in direct sunlight, or expose your skin to high heat immediately following the procedure.

What you will notice almost immediately is the plump and glowing nature of your skin. While some of these results are because of post-procedure inflammation, the healing process will only continue to improve your skin.

For best results, it is suggested that clients receive three to six treatments with four to six weeks in between. According to a 2008 study, skin treated with four microneedling sessions spaced one month apart produced up to a 400% increase in collagen and elastin six months after completing treatment.

By stimulating collagen production, microneedling reveals a fresh face with tightened skin, smaller pores, and reduction of scarring, discoloration, fine lines, and wrinkles.
