What to Expect with Microblading

Eyebrows are as unique as snowflakes. They all have their own size, thickness or thinness, shape and length. Tweezing, penciling, trimming and shaving to sculpt a great set of eyebrows has been the norm for how we’ve dealt with unruly brows in the past.

But in the past few years, microblading has quickly become one of the hottest techniques for more defined eyebrows that look natural and gorgeous.

What is microblading?

Microblading is a form of semi-permanent cosmetic makeup that uses very fine needles (called a microblade) to individually shape a clients eyebrows.  Microblading uses the techniques of tattooing, without the same level of permanence. Tattooing practices have been around for thousands of years, but the trend of microblading started in Asia only a little over two decades ago, with it coming to the US around 2015. Now, it’s becoming the norm in the western world.

Microblading is not the same as cosmetic tattooing. Instead of outlining and filling in your brows, microblading uses a manual blade with a specialized pigment ink for individual placement of hair-like strokes into the first three layers of skin, making it semi-permanent. Traditional tattooing uses a rotary or coil machine with tattoo ink and pushes in ink seven layers deep for a permanent outcome.

This technique of placing the hairs individually gives a person a very personalized and specified look JUST for them. It is great for anyone who may have scars, hair loss, unruly, or just looking a fuller look to their eyebrows.

Let’s answer some of the most popular questions when it comes to microblading:

Q: How long does microblading last?

A: Results can vary depending on skin type and care, but the general consensus is it lasts from 12-18 months, closer to 18 months for people with non-oily skin. About 2 months after your first procedure, your technician will typically schedule you to come back for a touch-up/assessment appointment. Results will slowly fade after a year to 18 months.

Q: Will microblading hurt?

A: Most technicians will use a gentle topical anesthetic to numb the brow area prior to starting the procedure, so it is not nearly as intense as an actual tattoo. Pain tolerance varies from person to person and even though it is not a totally pain free procedure, being calm and relaxed goes a long way to making your appointment as easy for you as possible.

You may feel a light scratching sensation or pressure and it is common for the area to feel bruised or sensitive for about a day following the appointment. Your skin may be a little red in the days following the appointment. As the tiny abrasions heal, you may feel as if you have a minor sunburn for a few days. It takes about 10 to 14 days to fully heal as the pigment settles.

Q: Do I need to prep my skin for my appointment?

A: Yes, there are a few things you can do before your microblading appointment. Make sure your skin is clean and moisturized, and try not to drink the night before for best results as drinking thins the blood and losing plasma can lengthen the healing process.

Q: How do I figure out the right shape for my face?

A: Do some research online for brows you love and you think would look great on you. Make sure to ask your technician and together you can make a brow that will be perfect and is tailor-made just for your face.

Q: How long does microblading take?

A: The first microblading session will be around 1-2 hours, with a large percentage of that time devoted to making sure the shape, style and symmetry are perfect and that you approve before the procedure starts. The actual microblading part takes around an hour.

Q: What do I need to do for aftercare?

A: There are a few things to do after your microblading appointment:

  • Don’t get the area wet for at least 10 days.
  • Avoid wearing makeup for at least a week. The pigment is still getting settled and the area is healing.
  • Do not scratch or pick the area.
  • No swimming or saunas.
  • Avoid heavy workouts or excessive sweating for the first 10 days.
  • Keep your hair out of your brow line.
  • Make sure to use any medication given to you by your specialist.
  • After the initial healing period, make sure to use sunscreen to maximize results for longer.

Most importantly, microblading can restore your confidence and make you feel even more comfortable in your own skin, with natural results that will have you doing a double take in the mirror for months to come. You deserve to feel your best every day. Are you ready to Best of all, microblading can restore your confidence and make you feel great in your own skin.

With results so natural that no one will be able to tell the difference between your natural brow and the added pigment, your new brows will blend in seamlessly as you enjoy your new look.
